Then and Now

Recently I found some old transparency pictures I took way back in 1976 (35 years ago) and so I thought I'd revisit the same locations and retake the same picture. Although most are landscapes, there have been some notable changes. If I'm honest, I prefer the views from 1976

1976 - the view from Higher House Lane, Heapey to White Coppice and Great Hill

2011 - The farm is now littered with junk, telephone wires now cross the field. The white building in the 1976 photo has either been removed or trees have grown to hide it

1976 - The view from the top of Leicester Mill Quarry from my fathers old Vauxhall Victor 101

2011 - an embankment has been put in front of the car parking area lessening the foreground view

1976 - Roundloaf from the Belmont Road

2011 - The distant dry stone wall in the 1976 picture appears to have collapsed. And a plantation of conifers has appeared to the left

1976 - White Coppice.

2011 - White Coppice. There are many changes. The large trees to the left of the centre houses have been removed whilst trees to its right have appeared. An extension has been added to the cottage on the left. Moving to Rose Cottage (far right) that too has had a large extension. The fence round the cricket pitch has been replaced and there are more trees on The Lowe (the hill in the background)

1976 - view from the Cricketers car park

2011 - an unsightly metal gate has been placed across the car park entrance. New fencing to the right along with a totally unnecessary gate across the bridge.

1976 - looking up Black Dean Brook.

2011 - Nothing could change here surely, well look again. The old tree in 1976 has fallen and a new one has grown. Rocks have been dumped against the left wall and many of the rocks on the river bed have moved. There has been a rock fall - see the large rock on the right above the waterfall, that wasn't there in 1976. Finally the silt pond is now empty of water

1976 - Winter Hill from Jepson's Gate, Anglezarke

2011 - many changes again. A fence has been erected alongside the track and the grassy field in the 1976 picture is turning to scrub. Conifer plantations have appeared on the top of the field and also on Winter Hill (far right). A couple of extra masts have been erected

1976 - Rivington Reservoirs
2011 - Only changes are that trees have appeared and line the whole of the reservoir, resticting the view somewhat. A fence has been erected (far right) and the grassy area to the right is now scrubby and difficult to access.
